Friends Helping Friends

Jesus made a fascinating statement in John 15:15 as he spoke to his followers and said, “No longer do I call you slaves, because the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.”

We know what Jesus was doing; he was shifting the dynamic of his disciples as mere followers to close relationships. They were going to get all of the inside story on what God was doing through Jesus and would know the “inside scoop” behind the kingdom Jesus represents.

In a sense, we are in the same relationship; “friends.” To me, your gifts represent so much more than “a donation” to the calling. It is easy for a ministry to label different parts of the work as “volunteer,” “board member,” “staff,” “prayer partner” or “donor.” Yes, those terms still apply, but in the big picture we are all friends. Just as the disciples were united in a common mission and a common leader, we—you and me—are united in a kingdom-focused mission as well.

Our common mission is offering the precious gift of life—both temporal and eternal—to those we see. Together, in our particular roles, we clasp the hands of the women and men who come in our door and walk with them on a journey toward of hope in the midst of a challenging situation.

Because we are together in this, we are no longer donors or staff members, board members or volunteers, prayer partners or event planners. We are friends. And as friends, I want you to always know the “inside scoop” on what we are doing and where we are going.

So thank you for being a friend. As we continue our journey together, please contact me with questions or thoughts, and I will continue to let you know how things are going on this end. It is a joy to serve alongside you, and I look forward to watching as our friendship—and our joint mission—grows.
