What’s Dad Got to Do with It?

Men are frequently ignored in the cultural conversation about pregnancy, abortion, adoption, and parenting. Yet the thoughts of the baby’s father or her feelings about him can be amongst the most important factors in a woman’s pregnancy decision. Some women will go through an unwanted abortion in order to avoid losing a relationship with a man they love. Other women will choose abortion rather than consider the possibility that a man they distrust would ever gain custody of their child. Conversely, women who feel secure in their relationship with their partner and who know that he wants the baby, are more likely to carry to term.

  • When men come into our clinic seeking help, there are many services that Raffa Clinic offers. If a man comes into a center seeking help when his girlfriend or wife is considering abortion, we ask him to bring her into the center. We ask them to come together or separately, depending on the circumstances. Men are often very interested in understanding abortion procedures and risks, as well as how the decision to abort could affect their relationship with their partner.
  • Likewise, if a woman comes into Raffa stating that her boyfriend or husband is pressuring her to have an abortion, she will be informed that no one has the legal right to force her to abort against her will. Raffa can help her find the resources to support her decision to carry her child to term.
  • If a woman would like to place her child for adoption, but her partner is resisting the adoption, we welcome him to join her. Together, we can help the father and mother explore his concerns about adoption. Many times, both men and women have fears about adoption that are based on misunderstandings of the adoption process and their rights. Raffa can help couples come to a reality-based understanding of the benefits and challenges related to adoption so they can make a decision that they can live with long-term.

Men need to be supported and empowered to make life-affirming decisions just as women do. The stress of an unexpected pregnancy can be terrifying for a man and fear of unwanted fatherhood may leave him feeling that abortion is an easy answer that will put his life “back to normal.” However, he may never have explored positive ways being a father could change his life. For many men, the emotional impact of losing a child to abortion is significant and painful.

Fathers need pregnancy centers too.

Did you know…

baby hand and mom black and white image

Did you know…

  • 1 in 4 pregnant teens choose abortion
  • ½ of pregnancies in US are unintended. 4 in 10 of those end in abortion.
  • 1 in 3 women under 45 in the US has had at least one abortion
  • 37% of women who abort self-identify as Protestant, 28% as Catholic
  • 40% of minors who abort say neither parent knew

What is Raffa doing about it?

  • We are increasing our staff and expanding our reach in order to provide a same day sonogram to every woman who is considering abortion.
  • This is important because 90% of women who have a sonogram in our clinic, choose life!
  • We are working to find new revenue streams and seeking out new supporters to fund this expansion to meet the needs of women contemplating abortion.
  • We have added mentors (men and women) and spiritual advisors to our volunteer staff in order to dig deeper and walk more closely with our patients.
  • We have been blessed to make an enormous impact on the lives of those in our county and on the next generation as well. In 2015 we were able to impact over: 649 clients, 435 pregnancy tests, 259 sonograms, 2076 hours of education.

I think what I am most proud of is that this year, 185 women who were planning to abort or being pressured to abort will celebrate their child’s first birthday. This is why we do what we do.

Friends Helping Friends

Groups-Hands

Jesus made a fascinating statement in John 15:15 as he spoke to his followers and said, “No longer do I call you slaves, because the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.”

We know what Jesus was doing; he was shifting the dynamic of his disciples as mere followers to close relationships. They were going to get all of the inside story on what God was doing through Jesus and would know the “inside scoop” behind the kingdom Jesus represents.

In a sense, we are in the same relationship; “friends.” To me, your gifts represent so much more than “a donation” to the calling. It is easy for a ministry to label different parts of the work as “volunteer,” “board member,” “staff,” “prayer partner” or “donor.” Yes, those terms still apply, but in the big picture we are all friends. Just as the disciples were united in a common mission and a common leader, we—you and me—are united in a kingdom-focused mission as well.

Our common mission is offering the precious gift of life—both temporal and eternal—to those we see. Together, in our particular roles, we clasp the hands of the women and men who come in our door and walk with them on a journey toward of hope in the midst of a challenging situation.

Because we are together in this, we are no longer donors or staff members, board members or volunteers, prayer partners or event planners. We are friends. And as friends, I want you to always know the “inside scoop” on what we are doing and where we are going.

So thank you for being a friend. As we continue our journey together, please contact me with questions or thoughts, and I will continue to let you know how things are going on this end. It is a joy to serve alongside you, and I look forward to watching as our friendship—and our joint mission—grows.

Community Vision Casting for Hunt County

Raffa Clinic has secured a community wide grant to help educate parents on how to raise healthy, caring, and responsible kids.  The Raising Highly Capable Kids program is a 13 week parent program based on the 40 Development Assets, which are essential building blocks that every child needs to be more successful.  Parents will learn to increase their knowledge of these assets and gain a skill set to strengthen their children in key areas such as:  Positive Identity, Social Competence, Setting Boundaries and Expectations, Constructive use of Time, Commitment to Learning, and Positive Values.  This program has the potential to help parents teach their kids to become more resilient as well as improve their GPA.  We believe this program can benefit our community and we want to open this offer to everyone serving in our helping organizations.  A program representative will share:

  • An overview of the program
  • Explanation and sampling of curriculum
  • Effectiveness and impact of program
  • What to expect
  • How your organization can benefit

For more information on the Capable Kids program visit www.capablekids.com

Time Is Ticking Away…

Just a few more hours…

You only have a matter of hours to give your end of year gift to Raffa Clinic. We have been blessed with an amazing year of ministry and are anxiously awaiting the BIG things in store for 2015!

Just a few notes about 2014:

  • 1,739 client visits between our Greenville and Commerce Clinics. (With our Quinlan Clinic scheduled to open this next spring, we are looking for this number to rise as we will be available to help even more people!)
  • 2,196 hours of pregnancy and parenting education provided at our Greenville Clinic. This is time spent providing expectant, new, and seasoned parents with the tools they need to raise up their children in safe, Godly homes.
  • 449 pregnancy tests. That is 449 opportunities to sit face-to-face with a girl in a crisis situation and help her to slow down…take a deep breath…and really look at all of her options. 449 chances to answer her questions about abortion and let the facts speak for themselves…that this isn’t the best choice for her or her child.
  • 187 sonograms. This is 187 times this year we were able to introduce a mother (and often, a father) to her baby. Our statistics tell us that 90-95% of the time a woman has an sonogram in our clinic, she WILL choose life for her baby. 187 times to see a new baby’s heart beating and little precious feet kicking away. 187 chances to make a difference in both the life of that child and the life of that mother.

Goals and plans for 2015:

  • Open a new Raffa Clinic in Quinlan in the spring to better serve the needs of our clients in the Quinlan/Tawakoni areas.
  • Expand our outreach to abortion vulnerable women and girls at TAMU-C, PJC, and local High Schools.
  • Present our abstinence program in every school district in Hunt County.
  • Begin a Fatherhood Program to equip the fathers in our clinic to be great fathers to their new babies.
  • Expand our Marriage Mentoring program to strengthen the client families at Raffa.
  • Minister to more women and men through one-on-one discipleship through our Hope Program.

How you can be a part:
Donate. We count on your financial support. Raffa Clinic is primarily supported by the Hunt County community. We offer one-time and monthly automatic giving via your credit card or your checking account. We also accept mail-in donations to: PO Box 9325, Greenville, TX 75404.
Volunteer: Raffa Clinic has MANY different ways to volunteer and we have volunteer orientations scheduled all throughout 2015. As we are expanding our services, we have even more need. Men and women are welcome (and needed).
Pray: Remember us in your daily prayer and sign up to receive emails when specific prayer needs arise for our clients, staff, or the ministry as a whole.

Thank you for a very successful year in ministry!
